Anonymous, Cheezburger, Wikipedia and Wordpress.Org to Join Reddit in anti-SOPA January 18th Blackout

In follow up to an earlier post entitled, In Protest of SOPA and PIPA, REDDIT Plans 12-hour blackout Jan. 18th, hacker Anonymous has announced that he will join Reddit in an anti-SOPA blackout next Wednesday, January  18.

According to Anonymous’ tweet, “On Jan 18th you will see no tweets from this account between 8a and 8p EST in support of #SOPAblackout! #J18.”

Cheezburger tweeted its intent to go dark on the 18th as well, “All Cheezburger sites will also be instituting a blackout on January 18th to protest SOPA and PIPA.”

Wikipedia and Wordpress.Org intends to participate in the blackout.

Wordpress  is providing a plugin for Wordpress.org users who would like to participate in the download.

WORDPRESS

“…Normally we stay away from from politics here at the official WordPress project — having users from all over the globe that span the political spectrum is evidence that we are doing our job and democratizing publishing, and we don’t want to alienate any of our users no matter how much some of us may disagree with some of them personally….”

Of course, there are those of us who would beg to differ considering Wordpress’ recent actions against BareNakedIslam but moving on.

“….Today, I’m breaking our no-politics rule, because there’s something going on in U.S. politics right now that we need to make sure you know about and understand, because it affects us all.

Using WordPress to blog, to publish, to communicate things online that once upon a time would have been relegated to an unread private journal (or simply remained unspoken, uncreated, unshared) makes you a part of one of the biggest changes in modern history: the democratization of publishing and the independent web….”

Okayyyyy….Well Wordpress  is making available a plugin for those interesting in participating in the anti-SOPA blackout.

“Whilst it is an American law, it has far reaching repurcusions for the web as a whole. Sites such as Reddit have said that on January 18th they are going to go dark between 8am and 8pm.

This plugin will let you join the cause. On 18th January your site will display a customisable page.”

The plugin will add a temporary 503 status and customizable page on your site.

As of this posting, Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales, is mulling it over and hoping to coordinate something with Reddit.

“…I think it would be great if we could act quickly to coordinate with Reddit. I'd like to talk to our government affairs advisor to see if they agree on this as useful timing, but assuming that's a greenlight, I think that matching what Reddit does (but in our own way of course) per the emerging consensus on how to do it, is a good idea. But that means we need to move forward quickly on a concrete proposal and vote - we don't have the luxury of time that we usually have, in terms of negotiating with each other for weeks about what's exactly the best possible thing to do. As I understand it, the Foundation is talking to people about how we can geolocate and guide people to their Congressperson, etc. Geoff will know about that. Our task is to decide to do it with a thumbs up / thumbs down vote.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 15:09, 11 January 2012 (UTC).”
