Gov NUDGING Parents to Use School Lunches as a Model for Family Dinner

Americans cannot say that we did not see this coming.  H/t Grumpy Opinions.

"…Responding to concerns that students are throwing away the healthy food on their cafeteria trays, the U.S. Department of Agriculture acknowledged that adapting to the changes ‘may be challenging at first, as students are introduced to new flavors and foods in the cafeteria.’
But the government also says parents can help school make the taste-transition easier:
‘We know that many parents are already making changes at home to help the whole family eat healthier,’ the USDA blogged on Monday. ‘We recommend reviewing school menus with kids at home and working to incorporate foods that are being served at school into family meals as much as possible…."

In other words, if a parent and does not feed his or her children in accordance with the school lunch menu program as dictated by the Marxist ruling elites, then one is a bad parent.
Horse manure in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow at high noon in the middle of a heat wave in July does not carry as bad a stench as that carried by such orders emanating from the Marxist rulers in the White House.
It is appalling that Empress Michelle would dictate to parents across America what we should feed our children.
I want the Obamas, their children, including the whole damned White House, Obama administration, USDA, Congress, Senate and their staff to eat the gruel being pushed on America’s public school children.  I want them to eat gruel for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
In addition, I want their spouses and children to eat that crap as well.  Of course, they will not because they think that they are better than the rest of us and therefore, they are the exception to their own rules.
In September 2011, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced before the National Restaurant Association that it is necessary for the American people to
"...adjust’ their tastes so that they like the kind of food the government believes they should eat—and ‘we have to make sure that what we do is create the appropriate transition.’
‘It’s going to take time for people’s taste to adjust and they will adjust over time, but it will take some time,’ he said. ‘So, we have to make sure that what we do is create the appropriate transition…."
Translation:  If nudging does not get Americans where the ruling Marxist elites Obamas want us to go, then they will resort to shoving.  After all, it is for the good or the collective or so they would have us believe.
The government does not have the right to dictate to Americans what we eat and what we should feed our children.  That is the responsibility of the parent and when the child is old enough, it becomes the responsibility of the individual.

The Wretched Nationalization of School Lunch

"…Lost in the talking points is the most pressing question: why do the USDA and White House have anything to do with what tens of millions of young Americans eat every day in the first place?
…For years, the USDA has favored a distorted food pyramid and horrible school lunch programs that seemed more geared toward enriching government contractors and subsidizing the big agricultural lobbies than feeding students affordable, tasty, and healthful meals….
... And anyone who actually ate any of this food in the last twenty years knows that it was only one step above the gruel fed in America’s prisons. I’ll never forget the nightmarish ‘turkey cubes,’ floating in gelatinous ‘gravy,’ that were inflicted upon the student body every Thanksgiving week. On a good day, students were treated with chicken nuggets or a quadrilateral of pizza-like substance. On most days, the schools served up something more resembling Soylent Green.
…It was in this context that students, starting in middle school and more so in high school, have taken refuge in the fast-food options sometimes provided--pizza delivered from nearby establishments--or simply got their sustenance out of vending machines. It was indeed a dismal situation that warranted the concern that has animated many activists. I have a considerable degree of sympathy for the work of chef Jamie Oliver, whose attempts to reform school lunches seem genuine, well-intentioned, and largely on the right track. And if she demonstrated purely a desire to lead by example, I’d have sympathies for the First Lady’s whole-food crusade as well.
But the federal government shouldn’t have anything to do with school lunches. A national war on obesity is a bad idea for many reasons, and America’s students shouldn’t be the guinea pigs.
…nothing will ruin the prospects of the next generation eating healthier than the last more than the school system making kids eat tasteless food and telling them it’s good for them."
A few days ago, I entered into a discussion with a neighbor a I met in the laundry room of my apartment building.
For the sake of disclosure, she is a retired teacher (union) and an Obama cultist.  This retired teacher advised me that she believes Michelle is doing what is best for the health of the children.
I then asked the neighbor who holds a Master’s in Science how she would feel about Michelle telling her what to feed her family and what to smoke and drink.
My logic being that anyone who smokes two packs of Marlboros a day and has a penchant for Bacardi with very little ice almost daily and far too often before noon would have more sense than to align themselves with the ruling elites when it comes what is being dictated as good for the collective.
After all, it was not too long ago that the woman who vociferously proclaimed, “I am NOT a liberal.  I am a Democrat” (I kid you not) was ranting and raving about Bloomberg’s no smoking policy.
Her response was to look away, mumbler under her breath as many Progressives do then change the subject.
Just saying.
