Superstorm Sandy uncovered decades-old mystery shipwreck on Fire Island

Archaeologists have been analyzing the mystery ship while they still have the opportunity

"Hurricane Sandy’s ferocious waves flooded Fire Island, N.Y., the barrier island off Long Island, leveling many dunes. One dune eroded about 72 feet to reveal a shipwreck approximately four miles east of Davis Park — though its identity is not certain. 
It is 'a rare treat to see something exposed,' said Paula Valentine, a Davis Park spokesperson. 
Archaeologists have been analyzing the ship while they still have the opportunity. In time, the ocean will bury it beneath the sand once more...."
